About the work

In the course of history, drawing has been a medium that is a bridge between imagination, thinking and shared and individual realities. It's considered as a tool to express and document thoughts, imagination, experiences, explorations, inventions, ideas. A drawing is mostly the beginning of the realization of an idea. The very basic/primitive visual technology for reflecting, documenting, communicating and imagining since the cave wall paintings.

The artwork ”IIIII…” reconsiders the medium “drawing” in the frame of today's global socio-political environments and performs it with today’s contemporary technologies by transforming it, shifting its ground of existence. It‘s becoming a metaphor for refuge, displacement and transformation. The drawing‘s fleeing from paper and transforming from 2 dimensional marks to sculptural objects that exist in 3 dimensional space. Yet staying connected to the 2. Dimension, to the walls by their shadows.

The installation consists of a 3d print drawing of a meters long queue of mini silhouettes that intersects through the room, suspended in the air, on the eye level. Waiting, connected figures with no details, no identity.

Waiting is a state, right before an event occurs. Waiting is also full of possibilities, dreams and reflections about the future. Bit by bit parting from the past and stepping towards an unclear future through accumulating tension.

The long queue image indicates autobiographical references that are also shared experiences with so many people who are in exile, who had to flee from their home. Sharing the feelings of unclarity, insecurity, ambiguity as well as hope regarding future during the long hours in the queues in front of the borders, embassies, immigration authorities, in the airports and many other state offices.

Title of the work intersects with the medium and the content of the artwork. ”IIIII…“ comes from the spoken Turkish language. It is a sound that is made between 2 words or sentences when there is a need for a short moment to think. It’s a phonetic bridge that has no meaning. As it is „umm..“ in English. As well as the written form of the sound, repetition of the letter resembles the waiting figures in the drawing.

In this sense the artwork invites the audience to a walk through the suspended queue drawing and intends to contemplate an emphatical experience through the medium and the imagery. It is an experience and a projection surface that triggers their individual memories as well as the shared common memories
